Natural carpets have a unique quality that cannot be replaced with synthetic materials. Wool, sisal, coir, and seagrass are different in texture and feel, and choosing one over the other is more than just choosing a color. Consider where the carpet will go, how high the foot traffic will get, and the kind of cleaning schedule you have in your home.

For hallways, stairs, and entryways, consider getting sisal carpets. They have a clean and structured look and can withstand high traffic. Seagrass is a great option for dry areas because of its smooth finish. Coir carpets have a more rustic look and work great for entryways. Each type of material has its own strengths, so use the room to guide your choice.

It's good to consider the light in the space. Natural light paired with a light colored carpet can make a room feel larger, whereas a warmer color carpet can make a room feel larger. That's why taking a sample home is a good idea – carpet samples can look different in different lights at different times of the day. Before you make a final decision on a sample, try placing it by the window and next to your furniture.

Underlay is a carpet component that may often be overlooked. Resting on the right underlay can improve comfort, extend the length of the carpet, and help support the carpet. Resting on the right underlay can also noticeably improve warmth and sound underfoot, if those elements are important to you.

Choosing a natural carpet is a big decision and not one that you should rush. If you take the time to select the right fibre, weave, and color to the room, you will end up with a floor that feels great from the first day and continues to serve you well for years to come.

Posted on May 27, 2021 at 1:04 pm

Most professionals will always recommend laying new carpet and insist you need underlay, but why is this? Underlay can bulk up the cost of replacing your floor but is it essential?

In short – yes. Although expensive, it is worth the investment. Underlay protects your carpet underneath and prolongs the life of it. Without suitable underlay, your carpets life span will be significantly reduced. Underlay will also help retain heat, which will keep you warmer in the colder months, as well as reducing energy costs.

This is not the only reason why we think underlay should always be used. It has many excellent properties, such as noise reduction. Underlay will help reduce footfall noise in upstairs rooms and helps deaden TV noises. It also adds comfort when walking on carpets; many people think that the spongy soft feel you get from walking on a new carpet is from the carpet itself. It is actually from the underlay underneath, and the better-quality underlay you buy will increase the comfort.

Although initially, underlay can increase the costs of replacing your carpets, it is worth the investment. You will save money on energy bills long term and have the extra comfort and increase the life of your new carpets.
